# Concentration Risk: Holding Everything in One Place

> The simplest control available to any holder is also the least used. What splitting across venues actually buys.

Every custody question above reduces to one decision a customer actually controls: how much is in any single place.

## The arithmetic

A single venue failing costs everything held there. Two venues each holding half means a single failure costs half.

This is not sophisticated and it is more effective than any assessment a customer can perform from outside.

## Why people do not do it

Convenience, fees, and the fact that managing two accounts is twice the administration. Also a belief that assessment substitutes for diversification.

It does not. The information needed to assess a venue is not available to customers, which is precisely why the failures surprised their customers.

## What splitting costs

Two sets of verification, two fee schedules, and transfers between them. Real but small, and mostly one-off.

For a business, two reconciliations instead of one. That is the genuine ongoing cost.

## What it does not protect against

A common cause: two venues using the same custodian, the same banking partner, or the same jurisdiction. Diversification that is nominal is not diversification.

Ask who holds assets at each. [Platforms that name their custodian](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-custody) make that check possible.

## The self-custody component

For holdings not needed for transacting, self-custody removes venue risk entirely at the cost of operational risk. The right split depends on competence rather than on principle.

A tested self-custody arrangement is safer than any venue. An untested one is not.

## The allocation worth considering

Working balance at a regulated venue, sized to what you move. A second venue for a portion of the rest. Self-custody for long-term holdings, if and only if the recovery has been rehearsed.

## The number that matters

What you could afford to lose entirely at any single counterparty. That figure, set deliberately, is the whole policy.

Most people have never calculated it and are carrying a concentration they would reject if stated as a number.

## Where the regulated venue fits

As the place for the part that must be reachable. [A regulated venue rather than an unlicensed one](https://collectnexchange.cy/compliance/cysec-licensed) lowers the probability of the event; the allocation lowers the consequence.

Both, not either. [Collect & Exchange, which is licensed in Cyprus](https://collectnexchange.cy/), is a reasonable answer to the first question and no answer at all to the second, which remains yours.
